Workers Compensation Bill
Posted over 5 years ago by Yonit Lipkind
Dear NPNY members,
Please be informed of the following:
As of January 1, 2020, only medical providers who have been authorized by the Board may treat injured workers in New York State.
Although previously able to treat injured workers and bill under their supervising physicians authorization, nurse practitioners (NPs) need to apply for authorization to treat injured workers in New York State. The application must be done in a single sitting and only after all mandatory training has been completed (see full details below).
As of January 1, 2020, when you treat an injured worker, you will submit your own medical reports and bills without the signature of a supervising physician. See our fact sheet for more information on what it means to be a Board-authorized medical provider.
Authorization process
To apply for authorization, you must:
- Sign up to use the NYS Workers’ Compensation Board Medical Portal, a new online resource for medical providers, insurance carriers and other workers’ compensation system participants.
- Complete the mandatory training courses.
- Complete the New Provider Authorization Request online application form, accessible on the Board’s Medical Portal, and submit it to the Board.
Sign up to Access the Medical Portal
To access the Medical Portal and new provider training, you must have an NY.gov ID. This is not the personal NY.gov ID that you may have with other agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Taxation and Finance, etc.
An NY.gov User ID and temporary password will be generated for you when you register for Medical Portal access. When you register for access, you will be asked for your email address. This should be your individual email address, not a group or practice email address.
Complete Required Training
Once you have access to the Medical Portal, and before applying for Board authorization, you must complete the following training modules required for NPs:
- Medical Portal
- Medical Request Forms (C-4 AUTH, MG-2 and MG-1)
- Billing: Medical Fee Schedules
- Dispute Resolution
- Medical Treatment Guidelines
- Variances
- NYS Workers’ Compensation Drug Formulary & Prior Authorization System
This training is delivered through the CourseMill learning management system, which you will access through the Medical Portal.
Once you’ve received your Medical Portal credentials, you can access the training by selecting Medical Portal from the “Log in to Access” box on the top right of the Board’s website homepage (wcb.ny.gov).
From the Medical Portal homepage, select Medical Provider, then Training, and then Training Requirements for Provider Authorization. You will see a listing of the required courses by provider type with links to CourseMill.
When accessing CourseMill for the first time, you will set up a new user account using the same email address you used when signing up for the Medical Portal. On future visits, you may be able to bypass the CourseMill login when signed into the Medical Portal.
Note: Your CourseMill password must be a minimum of eight characters, using a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and at least one of the following special characters: ! @ # $ % ^ & *
Complete the New Provider Authorization Request (Now Available!)
Once you’ve completed the required training, you can begin the New Provider Authorization Request online application form, which you can access from the Medical Portal homepage. Because the application must be done in a single sitting (you can’t save and come back later), it is important to have the following information readily available before you begin:
- Your individual National Provider Identifier (NPI)
- Mailing and practice address(es)
- NYS license number(s)
- Board certification(s), if applicable
- Disciplinary information
- Curriculum vitae/resume
Once you have completed your application and attached all necessary documents (e.g., certifications, CV/resume, disciplinary action), it will automatically submitted to the Workers’ Compensation Board. The Board will then review your application and notify you whether you have been approved for authorization to treat injured workers, and advise on next steps.
