Dear NPNY Members,

Nurse Practitioners of New York (NPNY), a NP Organization member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), would like to take the opportunity to update you on the current NYS NP Scope of Practice Bills.

The NY State legislative session will be concluding shortly.  It is unlikely the legislators will have the opportunity to vote on the NP Modernization Act or NP Practice Authority Bill before the end of the session. However, anything is possible! There have been important developments in the past weeks.

The NP Modernization Act (S4611 and A4846) introduced by Senator Young S4611A and Assembly member Gottfried A4846A were amended to have identical provisions in term of NP Practice Authority in the state of New York and are now companion bills.

This may be an indication of growing support of S4611 and A4846 within the current legislative environment in this legislative session. As many of you know, Senator Montgomery's Bill S2309 relating to NP full practice authority, has not gained much momentum and she is now a co-sponsor of Senator Young's Bill. NPNY applauds all of these legislators in supporting NP practice.

NPNY continues to encourage NPs to familiarize themselves with these bills, find out who their state legislators are and their position on NP Full Practice Authority.

Click to find out who is your state Assembly member and Senator.

The Advocacy and Policy Committee of NPNY continues to recommend legislators and the Governor to remove barriers for patients accessing NP care and update the statute for Nurse Practitioners practicing by granting full scope practice authority in NYS.

NPNY will continue to provide updates to our members. Be on the lookout for a further Advocacy and Policy update in the coming weeks.

The NPNY Advocacy and Policy Committee
