Can a NP preceptor bill for services provided by a student?

Nurse practitioners who precept students should know that they may not bill for the services provided by the student. The credentialed nurse practitioner preceptor must perform and document the medical services required for billing a procedure code. For example, if the service is an office visit for evaluation and management, the preceptor must perform and document the history of present illness, examination and medical decision-making.
The review of systems and/or past, family and social history may be recorded by a student, or by other ancillary staff, and may be gathered from a form filled out by the patient. The preceptor must document that he or she reviewed the information recorded by the student or entered on the form.
