Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action

Posted almost 9 years ago by Carmen Saunders

Dear Nurse Colleagues & Community:

Health care is changing, especially here in New York, and nurses can be an instrumental part of improving care during these exciting times by engaging new partners in your communities, classrooms, boardrooms, laboratories, operating rooms, and emergency rooms.

Nationally nurses make up the largest portion of the health care workforce, but there is a critical shortage of nurses and nursing faculty—an increasingly serious problem as the baby boomer generation ages and needs more advanced health services, and as millions of newly insured people enter the health care system. To help reverse the nursing shortage, which is one of our key goals, NYSAC will need partners in every sector of health care.

NYSAC is part of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, a national effort to improve health and health care through nursing. An initiative of AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Campaign includes Action Coalitions in 50 states and the District of Columbia working to implement the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Future of Nursing recommendations with a grassroots network of diverse stakeholders.

Engaging of new partners will require that each NYSAC region and each NYSAC member conduct sustained outreach and communications to a wide range of health care providers, consumer advocates, policymakers, and business, academic, and philanthropic leaders.

We need each of our valuable NYSAC members to partner with their local and regional nursing programs, health care institutions, and community organization that focus on health within their regions, and urge them to become members of NYSAC and to help promote our work. Nursing cannot do it alone; we need to build an interprofessional team to achieve our goal of improving the health of all New Yorkers!
