As the future of healthcare changes, there will be an increasing need for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in various settings. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the NP role is becoming increasingly important as there is an anticipated increase demand for primary care, prevention, health promotion and chronic care management. Nurse practitioners provide cost effective care and are an important part of the health care team
It is important to understand NP job satisfaction in order to retain NPs where they are needed the most. NP turnover can effect patient satisfaction due to an interruption of patient care and lack of continuity. Replacing NPs is not only challenging, it can be an expensive. When hiring new employees, there is a significant time period to orient them to the practice or hospital setting. The turnover rate for NPs is 12.6 percent, which is more than double of their physician counterparts. With the shortage of primary care physicians, this high turnover rate for NPs is very concerning. It is important to continue to research the level of NP job satisfaction as the role of NPs expands and becomes multifaceted.
To recognize the source of the problem, it can help employers to address specific concerns and allow NPs achieve a higher level of satisfaction. This information has the potential to limit turnover and improve patient care by maintaining continuity of care. There is limited qualitative research on measuring job satisfaction of nurse practitioners specifically by obtaining personal experiences. Understanding the lived experiences of NPs regarding job satisfaction will further enhance the current findings.
I am conducting a study for my graduate thesis on Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction. This qualitative study will focus on the lived experiences related to job satisfaction of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) working in various settings. The population included will be NPs working in various settings.
Questions to be explored:
What are the lived experiences related to job satisfaction of NPs?
What specific factors contribute to job satisfaction or dissatisfaction?
What do NPs find satisfying or dissatisfying about their role?
The research design to be used is a phenomenological research design. This type of research design is used in qualitative studies to allow the researcher to obtain information of real life situations from accounts of lived experiences from its participants. In this study, participants will answer open-ended questions regarding their experiences working in their specific employment settings and the specific factors that relate to job satisfaction.
I am seeking assistance from NPNY to generate interest in the topic regarding job satisfaction. I am seeking permission to survey your membership or possibly utilize your social media sites by sending a link of a survey I created via Survey Monkey regarding Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction.
