NYSAC Booth Draws Thousands at New York State Fair

The New York State Action Coalition (NYSAC) hosted a booth featuring nurse leaders and representatives of schools of nursing during the Great New York State Fair August 27-September 7, 2015 in Syracuse. The event was extremely successful and over the course of the fair, NYSAC distributed more than 2,500 pieces of literature about the coalition and nursing education, and raised more than $5,000 in donations. Additionally, more than 120 people signed up for the NYSAC email list to receive more information about the Action Coalition's work. Overall, NYSAC leaders estimate that at least 10,000 visitors came through the booth over the 12 days of the fair.

NYSAC also enjoyed media coverage on radio and in print. NYSAC leaders gave interviews to several radio stations, including WAER, WUUF/WACK, 93Q, and Westchester on the Level. The booth was also featured in articles in the Seneca Daily News, Yonkers Tribune, and the Fair Hound as well as on Nursing Research's social media sites.

NY Nursing Survey Seeks Board Service Information

There is still time to fill out NYSAC's online survey for nurses in New York. The survey was developed by the NYSAC Leadership Committee. It will help establish a baseline of information on current board appointments held by nurses in the state, which will be used to advance NYSAC's work to increase the number of nurses in leadership positions in New York. We encourage all NYSAC members to complete the survey themselves and forward the survey link to nurse colleagues.

This effort addresses a key recommendation of the Institute of Medicine's landmark report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, for the nursing profession to "produce leaders throughout the health care system, from bedside to boardroom, who can serve as full partners with other health professionals and be accountable for their own contributions to delivering high-quality care while working collaboratively with leaders from other health professions."

Boards are defined as "entities and positions that have strategic influence to improve the health of communities and the nation. These include corporate/industry boards, insurance company boards, hospital or health system boards, philanthropic boards, advisory boards, commissions, task forces, leadership-appointed boards (positions appointed by the President, governor, mayor, or state legislature), citizen-elected boards (i.e. school boards), and non-profit/non-nursing boards."

On behalf of NYSAC's Leadership Committee, we thank you for your assistance with this survey, which is available here: https://nyu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3wUqBFa9IK1t99r.

United Minds: New NAHN Westchester Mentorship Program

To increase the diversity of the nursing workforce, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) Westchester Chapter, which is supported by NYSAC, is launching the "United Minds" mentoring program. This program, sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, will provide mentoring and leadership development for nursing students. Concordia College's Nursing mentoring program is a key partner in this effort.

NAHN Westchester is currently seeking sponsors for the launch event, which will be held October 11, 2015 at the Royal Regency Hotel in Yonkers, New York. Donations will help to cover scholarships for students to participate in the program and venue costs. For more information on donating to the program, or attending the launch event, please contact NAHNWestchester@gmail.com.

NAHN Westchester would like to thank the Tourette Association of America for being one of the inaugural donors for this event. The Association is also hosting its own event, the Tourette's and Tic Disorders for Clinicians conference, on November 14, 2015 in Ithaca, New York.
