We are pleased to announce that Susan Moscou, FNP, MPH, PhD will be NPNY's 2015 recipient of the Ruddy-Van Slyke Nurse Practitioner of Distinction Award 2015!

Susan has been a FNP since 1995. She entered nursing school after obtaining a Master's in Public Health. After graduating nursing school, she worked for Montefiore Care for the Homeless caring for families residing in homeless shelters in the Bronx and adults who used soup kitchens and drop in centers. She decided to obtain a PhD in Health Policy (received in 2006) and left her work with homeless populations. While completing her PhD, Susan worked at a school-based clinic at Washington Irving HS and then worked for 10 years at Columbia University Health Services. Her fulltime job is an associate professor at Mercy College in the nursing program. Of note, she joined this nurse practitioner organization in 1993 when she was a student.

A message from Susan :
I am honored to receive the Ruddy-Van Slyke award. Nurse Practitioners of New York (NPNY) holds a special place in my heart. I have been involved in this organization since 1993 when I joined as a student member. NPNY is committed to promoting the role of the nurse practitioner as well as health care equity for all. Our organization recognizes the necessity for legislative policies because this is the strategy to ensure that NPs have a role in health care decision-making. Developing a political agenda is the only way NPs will be able to decide what is important to our profession. I have seen the role of the NP change since 1995 (my graduation date). These changes came about because of NPNY, the work of our dedicated members, and other NP professional organizations. I have also seen NPNY become part of the 21st century (ENP, electronic payments, Twitter, and Facebook) as a result of the wonderful younger generation of dedicated NPs carrying on the NPNY mission. Lastly, I see that NPs have a large role in delivering primary care to medically underserved communities. NPs came into being because there was a shortage of primary care physicians. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, we need more NPs to ensure primary care is delivered to these communities.

Congratulations Susan!
